Wellington Wind

Yes, people told us that Wellington was windy--but no-one really conveyed to us just HOW windy. Since Friday afternoon we have had 30 mph winds gusting to 60 mph. There was something of a lull late this afternoon, but now the winds are howling again. This morning the plan was for Joan to do her daily jog with the wind behind her, and I would drive after her to pick her up. When I went to the car, I was almost blown over and I had to fight like crazy to get the car door open, and then to get myself into the car, with the wind screaming around me. As I drove, I suddenly realized that I did not have my glasses--and immediately I felt certain that my glasses had been blown off as I struggled to get into the car. I could not find Joan-she had been picked up by a passing motorist who saw how she was struggling in the wind and in danger of being blown into the path of traffic.
I hoped I was wrong about my glasses--that I had just not put them on--but we searched the apartment in vain for them, and then we searched outside where the car was parked. A young man told us that an hour before his wallet had been blown out of his hand and he had seen it flying over a wall about twenty yards away. The only thing he got back was what he called his'blood-card.' His money and credit cards were gone with the wind.
Postscript of recent headlines:
"Testicles remark outrages a nation" The nation is Samoa.
"On-line map helps tourists say goodbye to sandflies."
"Man shoots pet cat after row with wife."
"Invaders had sword."
And a footnote on what a visitor to Wellington might see. A pod of killer whales spent yesterday cruising round Wellington harbour. Unfortunately, we did not see them.
And there was another headline: "It's summer, but not as we'd like to know it."
The article then notes that it is the twelth day of summer, but all Wellington has had are "showers, gales and just a glimpse of the sun."
Posted by David. Headline selection by Joan.
Let's hope the wind lets up tomorrow
